[First Steps] Mind mapping

When it comes to planning out a brand new browsergame, organizing your thoughts can be rather difficult. You might know that you want to design a game with a specific theme, but can’t decide what else you might need in that game to help it become successful. Mind maps are one great way to get your jumbled thoughts about your game organized.

What is a Mind Map ? A mind map (or the process of mind mapping) is when you create a diagram using specific words, ideas or tasks and arrange them around a central theme or idea. By doing this, you can visualize, structure and classify ideas based around your central theme.

For example a basic structure of your main page.

The centralized idea here is what opens a new page. You can see it holds a login, register and a screenshots link/page. To take it a step further, we could branch out even further with the login/register link/page, like so:

Now you see how organizing ideas in a mind map is helpful when it comes to organizing/developing your game? Much like a tree, you start at the trunk, and then break your web site into branches, and then those branches have branches, and then those branches have leaves.

What Tools and Software Can You Use for Mind Maps ? Ok, so you know what to do and how to do it, now you’re probably just needing a way to get it done. You really don’t need anything too fancy to get this accomplished. a notebook paper and pencil to sketch out your ideas into a mind map. There are some online solutions as well as software solutions you might want to check out to bring mind mapping into the digital age.

Bubbl.us is what we have been using for the screenshots above. It is an online tool that lets you drag and drop your ideas around on the mind map a very simple task. It might be a little confusing at first, but hover over anything you have a question about and you can get more information about it in the help pane in the browser. Wikipedia also has a long list of mind mapping software solutions worth checking into.

Hi, i have been trying to start a web game from a long time but i just don't know how to start one, i've got very basic language skills but i don't feel that learning the languages (php, java etc) is the problem, I want to learn the languages by starting a game and when i encounter problems of - i dont know how to do this, to then go and find solutions. Lots of people will say, first learn php and then start such a big project but i know how i learn best and it's by practising writing the codes and experimenting with them.

I was reading a really simple book of programming in C++ but until i did the excercises at the end of each chapter, it was quite hard for me to understand. I'm kind of kinestetic learner if you like.

Another general saying from Pro's is to download a free open sourced game engine (or paid if you can afford) and to work from it but (find me silly if you like) i don't even know how to install the game engine.. When you download it, you get a bunch of folders and not even a read me text file that actually explains something wise.

I used to have a website so i'm quite ok with working with file managers and such but i really want to do everything locally until something good comes out of a project, which i'm not even sure if it's possible :/

So this is why i'm here posting, i have ideas for games, but as for now, i'm not looking to make a game that lots of people will play or one that will give me cheques every month, i just want to make one for the experience and the achievment from it and then maybe go more advanced but i'm clearly stuck on how to start and that is why I'm looking for help.

Thanks for reading this and would be nice if someone could start me on my way.

What a coincidence, my IT teacher introduced bubbl.us to the class on Friday last week ^.^

A nice, informative post, thanks :)
